In 2022, distracted driving led to the tragic loss of more than 3,300 lives in the U.S., as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This alarming trend is largely due to the temptation of smartphones. Although most drivers understand the dangers, many struggle to resist checking emails or notifications while driving. A new online tool now offers an eye-opening demonstration of just how much roadway goes unseen when attention shifts to a smartphone.
Developed by Quanta, a context-based insurance provider, this tool aims to increase awareness about the hazards of distracted driving. “At Quanta, our goal is to foster a future where informed choices drive safer habits. Distracted driving is a significant risk, and we’re committed to helping reduce it,” says Jim Ryan, Quanta’s SVP of Business Development.
The tool includes scenarios like composing a text message while traveling at 70 mph, then compares reaction times between staying focused on the road versus handling a fast-food app order. The texting simulation, for instance, reveals the serious implications: it took an average of 14 seconds to finish the task. At 70 mph, that would mean covering over 1,400 feet (426 meters) without watching the road—a staggering distance for any driver.
While the tool primarily serves to raise awareness, professional simulators, like the $80 million National Advanced Driving Simulator in Iowa, support in-depth studies on distracted driving. This high-tech setup can simulate complex vehicle motions to aid academic research.
“Although this tool doesn’t replace advanced simulators, we hope it clearly illustrates the danger of taking even a quick glance at a phone while driving,” Ryan adds.
The solution to distracted driving is straightforward yet powerful: keep your eyes on the road, and save mobile interactions for when you’re safely parked.
