Google is rolling out a host of new features for Google Maps in India, tailoring the service to better meet the country’s unique needs and various use cases.
AI-Enhanced Navigation
A key highlight is the introduction of an AI model designed to help drivers navigate flyovers and narrow roads more efficiently. This AI uses satellite imagery and Street View data to estimate road width, and takes into account factors such as road type, building distances, tree cover, poles, and drains. This helps drivers avoid narrow roads, and when unavoidable, the app provides warnings about upcoming narrow sections. Initially, this feature will be available on Android devices in eight cities, with an iOS rollout to follow soon.
Improved Directions
Google Maps will now display flyover callouts during navigation, providing clearer instructions such as “take the flyover” instead of the less familiar “take a ramp.” This enhancement will be available in 40 cities across India, first on Android devices and Android Auto, with Apple’s CarPlay integration to follow.
EV Charging Stations
The app will now include information about over 8,000 EV charging stations in India, in partnership with ElectricPe, Ather Energy, Kazam, and Statiq. This feature, already available in the U.S. for cars, will also cover two-wheeler EV charging stations in India. Users can view plug types supported at these stations directly in the app.
Public Transport Integration
Google has partnered with India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and Namma Yatri to enable booking of local train and metro tickets, and hailing autorickshaws within Google Maps. The service is launching in Kochi and Chennai, with tickets delivered as QR codes. Plans to expand to more cities and transport modes are underway.
Curated Lists and Community Updates
Google Maps is introducing curated lists of popular places to visit in cities like Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, and more, in collaboration with Magicpin and NDTV Food. Users can find these lists by searching for terms like “Best ocean-view cafes in Goa” or “Top breakfast places in Mumbai.”
Additionally, the app interface now allows users to easily report crashes, slowdowns, construction, lane closures, stalled vehicles, and road obstacles using tappable icons.
